Almost no one, including transmission shops, are repairing continuously variable transmissions. In this case of the CVT, it’s not just the dealerships. We explained, the dealerships in general, almost never actually repair a transmission. When the customer came to pick up his vehicle he was inquisitive as to why the dealership did not offer him the same repair we performed. For less than $2,000 we were able to put this customer back on the road, in a vehicle he loves, for years to come. The pulley slides showed some wear, but were very serviceable. Both of the sheaves surfaces looked relatively clean and could simply be mildly resurfaced. The combination chain/belt assembly looked good. ![]() The rest of the transmission looked to be in good order. The customer approved us removing and repairing his CVT transmission.ĭisassembly of the transmission showed a fully stuck, pump flow control valve just as our technician had diagnosed prior to removing and disassembling the transmission (see figure 1). The good news was it could be repaired without having to replace the transmission. Our technician was able to identify a problem with the pump flow control valve. We invited him in for our preliminary no wrench transmission diagnostic. Like most with a CVT issue and sticker shock, he scoured the internet and found us. He had always gone to his trusted dealer so they were his first stop when he wanted the transmission looked at. ![]() He loves the car and wants to keep it for some years to come, but he had a hard time swallowing that price. Both of these subtle symptoms were getting increasingly worse, so he took his Nissan Murano to his trusted dealer.Īfter leaving his vehicle with the dealer, they quickly quoted him $4,800.00 to replace his CVT ( Continuously Variable Transmission) transmission. He also began to notice the vehicle would hesitate when accelerating to pass someone when he was already at a cruising speed. He began to notice when leaving a stop, a slight hesitation that was getting progressively worse. This customer owns a 2012 Nissan Murano, front wheel drive (fwd) with 148,057 miles. RE0F09B / RE0F09A / JF010E (Nissan nomenclature / JATCO nomenclature) In the circumstances is the offer of 75% reasonable? Do I have any hope of further redress? Also I understand that, in the USA, at no cost to owners of Nissan cars with CVT gearboxes the warranty on that part has been increased from 5 years and 60,000 miles to 10 years and 120,000 miles and that any owner that had paid for repairs before the warranty was increased would get a full refund of the cost including labour.By Dave Riccio, ASE Certified Technician, Owner of Tri-City transmission & Auto Repair, Co-host of Bumper to Bumper RadioĬASE STUDY: Nissan CVT Repair versus Replacement (Continuously Variable transmission)Ĭustomer Saves $3,000 over CVT Replacement Quote I have not contacted the dealer about this issue as I do not think I have any hope of redress from them. Unfortunately I had delayed getting the car serviced at its first MOT in July as my garage had agreed that 4 services for a car that had done 14,00 miles was excessive. Obviously I do not know but, from further conversations, I believe that Nissan would have paid the whole cost of the part had I had the car serviced since buying it. Nissan have agreed as an act of goodwill to pay 75% of the cost of the parts. After completing somewhat less than 10,00 further miles, the CVT gearbox has failed and needs to be replaced at a cost of £6,000 replacement parts and circa £800 labour. It was an ex-motabilty, done less that 8,000 miles and had been serviced 3 times since new. I purchased a Nissan Qashqai Acenta 1.6 CVT approximately in October 2015.
